As I head south from Bozeman, I realize the sightings of wild horses on the plains of Wyoming are fast becoming an irresistible pull for me. It’s something about the vastness and emptiness of the sage covered spaces combined with the beauty of wild horses that keeps me coming back; an American west visual that triggers my creative energy.

Crazy in Love, is for all the un-afraid lovers who live life with unbridled passions; a reminder of the only thing that really matters, love.

There is a popular saying “Dance as if no one is watching” which of course encourages you to let loose and stop being timid. I’d like to add a variation I think is even more important; “Love as if everyone is watching.

I managed to get ahead of the 3 wolves again, and I set up with my camera kneeling in the snow next to my van. The black and dark gray eventually peeled off, but the light gray continued towards me. And she is the one I wanted. She was almost white, and without question the most beautiful wolf I have ever seen.

Many wolves are naturally skittish of humans and vehicles, but others are indifferent. This light gray was curious and unafraid as she loped toward me along her path. I banged off of a few photos and pinched myself knowing how fortunate I was to be there at the right place and right time.

I had exited the van through the passenger sliding door and was now kneeling in the snow against the driver side door. I respect the rules in the park and as she got closer I reached up and tried to open the door, but found that door locked and I had left my keys in it. I knelt back down and decided not to move for fear of startling her. My camera with my long lens was now useless because I foolishly allowed myself to become too close. She continued on her path and all I could do is just stay still and enjoy this incredible moment as she passed by me.

I'm constantly searching for beauty and peace, and sometimes I find something more akin to the sublime-a feeling of overwhelming awe and wonder. I've titled this piece "Spirit Horse" because I felt something light and spiritual as I kneeled and looked up at this beautiful animal. I am probably always in search of that. It is who I am now; a believer looking for signs. I'm sure I'm not alone in this. It was an impressionable and magnificent moment out in the middle of nowhere, Wyoming.

A lone wolf in the pure whiteness of Yellowstone’s winter is a favorite amongst minimalist and art lovers alike. Winter in the park is painted white providing unique opportunities for framing distant shots of wildlife. I followed this wolf for a couple hours, first by following the sound her howling from deep in the trees, and finally as I tracked her across the Lamar Valley. The experience on this cold morning is one of my most memorable in Yellowstone.

After being hunted down and completely eliminated during the early 1900s, the wolf has returned, and has taken back its rightful place in Yellowstone. The re-introduction began more than 25 years ago, and by most measures it has been a success. And yet, there are still forces, very strong forces, that believe reintroducing wolves was a mistake. Trophy hunters relish the season where a wolf can be taken just outside the park boundaries. And this year they set a record for the number of Yellowstone wolves taken by the hunt. The debate rages on, but for now and the foreseeable future, the wolves are back home in Yellowstone.

The most photographed barn in the world in what I hope is an unrecognizable perspective. The Moulton Barn sits on Mormon Row in the valley of the Grand Tetons. Visitors and photographers travel from around the world to see the barn lit by the morning sun rising above the mountains to the east as the Grand Tetons create a perfect background. But for me that scene has been photographed a million times and that bores me.

As I arrived at the barn I was greeted by a dense morning fog that put a smile on my face because I wanted something different and the fog would provide the opportunity to add negative space to my image. The other 30 photographers were grumbling about their bad fortune with the weather blocking the Tetons, and began setting up their tripods next to one another within a very crowded area. They were there to get the shot that they had seen before.

I’m reminded by the best piece of advice I’ve received as a photographer, “show me something I haven’t seen before.” Which doesn’t mean don’t show me the Moulton Barn, but rather, show me the Moulton Barn in a unique perspective. After dozens of visits to the barn I’ve finally captured the scene in my personal style.

I have a love and connection with wolves. And here in Montana, those can be fighting words. Soon that might be the case in Colorado. A plan to reintroduce wolves in the the state is underway with the release of wolves planned for December. This image is for them, a beautiful and fierce wolf coming right at them.

Old Faithful, Yellowstone | 2024

This image is special to me. I’ve been chasing an image of Old Faithful created in my personal style for years. And, at last, I have finally captured it. 

I tend to obsess over simplicity in my art. I find peace and harmony in my life by eliminating the noise, and I try to apply that same principle to my style of art. My intention with this piece is to show the most photographed geyser in the world in a different way; in a more serene and ethereal style. I want you to imagine the delicate balance between the mystical beauty of Old Faithful at this initial eruption moment juxtaposed against the raging power that we know is boiling just below the surface. 

To get this image I had to plan and also rely on a bit of luck. I knew I needed a few things to happen at the same time; sub-zero temperature, an eruption timed very close to daybreak, a clear sky, very little wind, an unusual shooting perspective, and deep snow. All of those things have been a challenge to get together at the same time, but one morning this past month I had them all (with the exception of the deep snow). In hindsight my preconception of this image with deep snow would have missed the mark. I think there is just enough texture remaining around the surface of the geyser spout that would have been diminished with the deep snow that I was originally hoping for (there is a lesson there, of course). 

“Wondrous”, captured seconds into an eruption at -36 degrees below zero, is for the brave people who choose to embrace the fragile beauty in life while knowing all too well the turmoil that often lies just beneath the surface.

It was so cold nothing worked properly…my vehicle, my camera, my fingers…and for some reason I still had a crazy big grin spreading across my frozen face as I searched for something “for the wall”. As it turned out, it was indeed a personal record cold for me this day (-40 degrees) and I could not have been happier with the conditions. While most people were hunkering down in front of a warm fireplace, I was experiencing Yellowstone at its extreme.

I found this big male bison heading west down the middle of the road toward the Lamar Valley. The frigid morning afforded me a couple of things that I needed; the obvious frostiness, but maybe just as important, an unusually traffic-free road. I was able to spend almost 30 minutes without interruption with this beautiful bison. The experience was worth the pain that comes with near frostbit fingers and nose. I am thankful for another beautiful day in Yellowstone.

For whatever reasons I’ve always associated the words love and freedom with wild horses. Or maybe it’s freedom to love.

I’ve learned that to capture images of wild horses up close you need to be patient, and have the right approach. I’ll drive for hours on dirt roads of Wyoming searching the open spaces for wild horses, very similar to searching for wolves in Yellowstone. When I finally come across a herd I’ll stop the vehicle and walk away from it and sit down. If I’m lucky, the herd will notice me and become curious, gradually coming closer and closer. These moments are rare and provide magical moments for me.

Watching a wolf hunt as he easily navigates through the deep snow is something to see. Their extra-long legs are designed for this very purpose and give them an advantage during the long winters in Yellowstone. As the season drags on the wolf becomes stronger and its prey becomes weaker. It is also the time the wolf needs are at their greatest in preparation for denning, and the new litter of pups to arrive in the spring.

But this hunter also becomes the hunted. Restrictions on hunting wolves were recently loosened and the Yellowstone wolves were hit hard. And so the debate rages on about wolves, and more specifically the wisdom of wolf reintroduction. All eyes are now focuses on Colorado as they plan to reintroduce wolves back to their western slope later this year.

Few things are more captivating than the presence of a Yellowstone bison up close and marching toward you. My artistic preference is to place the bison’s massive head above the horizon line eliminating any clutter. This requires the camera to be low to the ground which also gives a more powerful angle of view setting the stage for a powerful piece filled with well-deserved gravitas.

This bison was a few hundred yards from the north entrance of the park and headed towards the herd just outside the park boundaries. There is protection against hunting bison, but that protection ends a few miles up the valley where hunting begins. The massive amount of snow this year has forced more bison to leave the park in search of lower ground and better conditions. This winter one-third of the total Yellowstone bison population is projected to be reduced.

We’ll never know if this bison made it back to the safety of the park. It’s prime time we revisit adding protection for the American Bison.

This cat famously chased a deer off the high cliffs in the Firehouse Canyon this past winter. We know the deer fell hundreds of feet before in bounced once and came to rest in the deep snow. What we don’t know is did the cat fall from the same height and survive, or did it work its way down to a lower height and jump. Either way it made a big splash in the snow just 10 yards away from its meal and survived. I visited the site day after day hoping to get the cat alone and away from mess it was making. It had its prize and stayed on top of it for a week. On our last day of the trip a snowstorm came and covered the deer with 6” of fresh snow giving me the clean white background I was hoping for.

A bedded bull elk raises his head towards the morning sun in Yellowstone. The velvet on his antlers will soon give way to a healthy rack of weapons for the duels in the fast approaching rut season. But for now, a warm summer morning and soft grass gives new hope for the day to come.

Steam and long shadows fill this unique image of a road shot near the Firehole River in Yellowstone. A few hours earlier I was given the advice that has since become my guiding principle as a professional photographer; “show me something I haven’t seen before”. While images of Yellowstone’s geysers are everywhere, The Road Show feels fresh and unique.

Nothing captures the American spirit of freedom better than wild horses galloping across the wide open ranges of the West.

When I spend time in what’s known as the Wind River area in Wyoming, I always find myself imagining what it must have been like just a few hundred years ago. Many of these “wild” horses are descendants of the horses brought here by the Spanish, and this one in particular has that look about him. He was with his harem of about ten others and was wildly protective of them. As I was capturing images of the herd from a distance, he spotted me and galloped over to let me know in no uncertain terms who he was. After a combination of very persuasive snorts, grunts, and ground strikes, we quickly came to an understanding that these were indeed his horses. I left his beautiful world as the sun set and the adrenaline faded. What a magnificent and stunning creature.

The battles this ram has endured are chronicled in the scars on his horns and tell a story all their own. Perhaps not dissimilar to the scars we all accumulate living through the challenges in our own lives. As I look at this piece I feel the strength and resolve that comes from this rollercoaster of life.

The undisputed heavyweight champion of Yellowstone is without question the American Bison. These two big males stormed up the hill leading away from the park’s storied Lamar Valley Buffalo Ranch leaving behind a wake of steam.

I credit the capture of this image by being patient, which does not come naturally to me. I have driven the road that travels though Lamar Valley hundreds of times, always hoping for an opportunity to compose this shot with Mt Norris and the ranch as the background. I had spotted these two a mile back down the road and was fortunate to find a spot ahead. Laying flat on my stomach, I was able to capture a powerful image with a true sense of place. One of my personal favorites.

The strength and fortitude of the American Bison makes them the undisputed Lords of Yellowstone. I found this bison clearing mountains of deep snow to feed on whatever grass he could find. He stopped for only a moment to stare at me before resuming the Herculean task of fine a meal. The effort required is nothing short of miraculous given he must do this all day, every day, for months on end, just in order to survive. The harsh conditions of Yellowstone is not for the meek. Only the strong survive here.
